Frequently Asked Questions

What will we talk about during our initial conversation?

We will answer your questions and focus on developing a contextual, comprehensive understanding of your unique family experience and your expectations for our services.

You share about your family, and your hopes for them. Our intention is to understand you and your family well enough that we are confident our process will fit your needs.

We will explain how the Discovery Experience™ helps a family

  • deepen their understanding of each other
  • strengthen connections by weaving the individual insights together for a meaningful, facilitated family conversation
  • contribute to a sense of individual and family well-being by helping each person to feel seen and heard

What is the fee for your services?

One time set up fee

Our one time set up fee provides for coordination of communication with your family, creation of your Family Discovery Tree graphic, and preparing your family’s advisor to facilitate your family conversation.

Per person fee

Our per person fee provides for the individual Discovery Experience™. Each family member will have several private, personalized conversations with their Discovery Experience™ Guide to help them use the process and it’s resources effectively.

The Discovery Experience Guide also helps each family member prepare for a positive, facilitated family conversation.

How do I decide if your services are right for my family at this time?

We designed the Family Tapestry Discovery Experience to be an effective step towards self and family flourishing. It can be a first step or a follow-up step for other resources your family has used.

We do our best to clarify your expectations and to only offer our services if we feel confident we can meet them.

We are focused on helping family’s that desire to deepen their understanding of each other. We reinforce positive family dynamics and dialogue to help support stronger connections within and between generations.

Can I go through the individual Discovery Experience™ even if my family is not ready to participate?

Absolutely! The increased self-awareness gained from your individual Discovery Experience™ will enable you to be a more effective advocate for the process with your family. Also, deeper understanding of self supports increased effectiveness in the workplace, and in leadership roles.

Will you collaborate with our other advisors?

We value collaboration. If you read our story, On the Way to Canterbury on our About page, you know our Discovery Experience process was developed through the power of collaboration. Just let us know who to call and your expectations and guidelines for working together.

Who will facilitate our family conversation?

If your family’s lead advisor will facilitate your family conversation, our one time set up fee includes preparing your advisor to lead the discussion.

If you do not have an advisor who can facilitate, then you can expand your engagement with Family Tapestry and we will provide facilitation services. Our facilitation fee is determined by the time required and any travel expenses.

Increased self awareness and reduced conflict help improve well-being

How does the Discovery Experience help increase self-awareness?

The Discovery Experience™ process and resources contribute to the following aspects of self-awareness:

  • Self-reflection-The experience begins with prompts for self-reflection in our Reflection Survey
  • Self-concept-The on-line resource PRO-Development™ (PRO-D™) helps develop a clearer understanding of your core identity which includes roles, behavioral style, and aspirations.
  • Self-understanding- The PRO-D™ resource helps increase understanding of your strengths, values, and personal mission.
  • Self-acceptance- Individual conversations with your Discovery Experience Guide help you recognize aspects of yourself revealed by both your Reflection Survey and the on-line resources, PRO-D™ and Learning Type Measure, without self-criticism.

How does the Discovery Experience help reduce conflict?

Read this article by our Research Director Will Hughes that shares how approaching conflict with curiosity may help.

Metaphor

How is use of metaphor helpful in the Discovery Experience?

Use of metaphor an important part of the Discovery Experience™. Metaphorical language helps convey emotion and impressions, and it activates imagination. Metaphors can also help make a topic or situation more relatable.

Why is using metaphor so important?

Our Founder, Bill O’Brien, is a master of metaphor. He knows from over 40 years of experience that use of metaphor helps facilitate understanding of self and others.

Our Founder, Bill O’Brien, would like to share comments on metaphor by the artist Robert Beck

“All of our communication is built on things that are something else. Spoken words are vibrations. Photos are grained, screened or pixilated simulations. A written letter is just marks on paper.

When they are organized in a predictable manner these things can convey and idea. We just have to see (or hear) them enough to recognize the patterns and the meaning associated with them. Once we start using symbology and metaphor to represent larger or unrelated thoughts, the opportunity to describe expands exponentially.

Interpreting those ideas presumes you have experienced something you can relate them to. One thing builds on another, creating more effective communication.”
